Why West Auckland?

West Auckland has something that most of the city simply doesn't — access to real, ancient bush. The Waitakere Ranges Regional Park stretches across the western edge of the city, and Waiatarua sits right at its doorstep.

When children come to The Bush Base, they're not doing nature activities in a manicured park. They're in the actual bush — surrounded by native pōhutukawa, kauri, and the sounds of the forest. It's the kind of environment that naturally invites exploration, wonder, and deep play.

We believe strongly that West Auckland is one of the best places in Aotearoa to raise children who know and love the natural world. We're lucky to be here, and we don't take it for granted.

What Is Nature-Based Learning?

Nature-based learning is an approach that uses the natural environment as both setting and teacher. Rather than learning about nature from a textbook, children learn through nature — building, observing, getting muddy, taking risks, and discovering things no worksheet could ever replicate.

Research consistently shows that time in nature supports children's emotional regulation, physical development, creativity, and wellbeing. Children who spend regular time outdoors tend to be more resilient, more curious, and more confident.

At The Bush Base, nature-based learning isn't a curriculum add-on — it's the whole approach. The bush is our classroom, and the children's curiosity is our curriculum.

How The Bush Base Is Different

There are several excellent nature-based programmes in the wider Auckland area. Most operate mid-week, in parks or on rented properties. Here's what makes The Bush Base distinct:

  • Monday and Wednesday — we run two days a week, and families can choose one or both. Most other Waitakere Ranges programmes operate mid-to-late week.
  • Home-based property — we operate from a private property in Waiatarua, not a public park. Children have a consistent, familiar space to come back to each week.
  • Homeschool-aligned — we were designed with homeschooling families in mind, though we welcome everyone.
  • Small and intentional — we maintain a maximum ratio of 1:8. It's a genuine community, not a large programme.
  • Emergent curriculum — the children's interests drive the day, not a pre-written programme.

We're not trying to be everything to everyone. We're trying to be the right fit for families who want something warm, authentic, and deeply rooted in this land.
