One day a week sounds small. In practice, it changes everything.
Children who come to The Bush Base on Mondays, Wednesdays, or both have something to look forward to. A day where nobody tells them what to think, where to sit, or what to make. A day in the bush with friends, where their ideas are the curriculum.
For homeschooling whānau, it provides a consistent rhythm — dedicated days with kaiako and community so parents can work, study, or simply breathe. For families with children in school, it gives their tamariki a completely different kind of day, once or twice a week.
One day or two. Real impact.
No two days are identical — that's the point. Our programme follows an emergent curriculum, meaning the day unfolds around what the children are curious about, not a pre-written lesson plan.
A typical day might include:
Our kaiako are present, warm, and attentive — scaffolding rather than directing.
The Bush Base is for children aged 6–12 — and their families
Get a reliable, community-rich day each week while your tamariki learn in a hands-on environment. Many of our families are full-time home educators.
Your child attends school during the week — and on Monday or Wednesday, they get something completely different. A day in nature, without desks, bells, or homework.
Active kids, curious kids, anxious kids, creative kids — children who don't quite fit the standard mould often thrive most at The Bush Base.

Not at all. We welcome children who attend school during the week and homeschooled tamariki equally. Many families use The Bush Base as one enriching day alongside their regular school week.
Monday gives homeschooling families a consistent anchor early in the week — children arrive fresh. Wednesday offers a mid-week reset. Families can choose one day or both, depending on what works for them.
Sturdy shoes, weather-appropriate clothing, a packed lunch, and a water bottle. We spend a lot of time outside — muddy is fine, wet is fine, cold is fine. We're in the bush.
Yes — we offer try days during the normal term. Just get in touch and we'll find a good day for your whānau to come and experience it firsthand.
Life happens. We just ask that you let us know in advance where you can. Missing a week doesn't affect your place — the term fee is for the term, not each individual session.
Fill in our enquiry form and we'll be in touch. We'd love to hear about your child and what you're looking for.
